Mission Statement

The primary mission of Community Unit School District No. 140 is to provide learning success for all students.  Emphasis shall be placed on creating an effective school climate characterized by:

A.    Positive, caring reinforcement of each student's efforts.
B.    A business-like atmosphere with learning as the important business.
C.    A neat, attractive, and well-maintained physical environment.
D.    Well-defined priorities for teaching and learning.
E.    Explicit standards for behavior, with discipline administered quickly and fairly.
F.    Parents involved in the life of the school.
G.    A building-based educational program.

Organizational Structure

The educational service of the Community Unit #140 School System is organized and maintained as a unified program of instruction to be operated as a single system.  Although the schools shall operate as a single system, they shall be diversified in their offerings in terms of community educational needs, as well as varied to individual needs of children and youth.

The district is organized on a Kindergarten, 4-4-4 plan.  Primary schools are organized on a modified self-contained classroom basis and normally include kindergarten through fourth grade, operating under a continuous progressive plan.  The Middle School is planned to house grades five through eight with the High School housing grades nine through twelve.

Cancellation of Early Dismissal

During the school year there may be days when school must be dismissed early because of inclement weather or unforseen emergencies. According to the School Code of Illinois, we are required to have school in session for a minimum of five (5) clock hours per day. If it should become necessary to dismiss school early, a decision will be made by 11:00 a.m. and communicated to local radio/T.T. stations. When an unscheduled early dismissal occurs, Kindergarten and afternoon Bright Beginnings will not meet. Practices for extra-curricular activities will be scheduled at the discretion of the supervisors.

 Please make contingency plans for your child in case school is dismissed early or cancelled.
